Mayako Nakamura

Based in Tokyo, Japan

Born in Hachioji, Tokyo in 1976 and currently residing in Hachioji, she graduated from Sophia University in 1999 with a major in art history in the Faculty of Comparative Culture. In 2009, she earned her BA in oil painting from Musashino Art University in the Faculty of Art and Design, Department of Painting. She depicts another everyday life, layering myriad sensations on the spatial perceptions of the body, the impressions of reality known to the mind, and the universal forms sought by the heart. She has exhibited her paintings in solo and group exhibitions in Japan and internationally. She has collaborated on projects, including hotel murals, clothing, bookbinding and tableware.

Tableware by EATART (Hitomi Otsuka & Mayako Nakamura) is painted by Mayako Nakamura in collaboration with Riso Porcelain, Arita and Saga. Using natural materials like shepherd's purse, mugwort, Japanese pampas grass and sakura branches as "Plant Brushes" I paint on the unglazed pottery with gosu (cobalt oxide) as if the grass and trees were swaying in the wind. When I look at the lines and traces that have been baked- I feel the wind blow. I hear the sound of nature. Eventually, the painting on the porcelain begins to look like a landscape. A story begins. Arita porcelain by EATART is created at Riso Porcelain. The process is as follows:- Mold → unglazed kilning → underglaze painting → blue glaze → baked in the kiln → sandblasted. The sandblasting process gives unique quality to EATART tableware. The Arita Blue becomes even bluer. The beauty lies in the smoothness reminiscent of stone. It brings joy and comfort to daily living.
